Howells is an all girls’ boarding school in North Wales. Originally established by Thomas Howell in the mid 18th century as a charitable organisation for orphaned girls, it now attracts fee-paying pupils from all over the world. Some girls start their life as a boarder at the age of six and continue through to the junior, senior and then sixth form where they leave at the age of eighteen to attend university and continue their education.

Many of the pupils have parents who are in the Forces and will often go for months without seeing their families. They can only leave the school at formal exeat weekends when they will stay with their legal guardians.

The photographs are a selection from a larger series of images documenting a small group of first year girls, Aged between eleven and twelve, they are extremely independent but occasionally still home sick and relying in on their friendships with their fellow pupils, house mistresses and member of staff to see them through the tough times away from home.
