Eleri Griffiths

After leaving school at the age of 18 Eleri travelled to the USA to work as an au pair. During her stay a mutual friend introduced her to Bruce Dale who was working as a staff photographer for National Geographic Magazine.  This chance meeting sparked an interest in photography and on returning to her home in North Wales Eleri persuaded her parents to lend her the money to buy a Rolliflex camera, she enrolled at her local college and started taking pictures.

In 1990 Eleri gained a place at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and spent the next three years training to work in the theatre. During her 10-year career as an actress, Eleri maintained her love of photography and eventually decided to return to full time education in order to pursue her passion for still images.

Eleri studied for a degree on the internationally renowned documentary photography course at the University of Wales in Newport, established by the celebrated Magnum photographer David Hurn. During her time at Newport Eleri was guided by photographers such as Paul Seawright, Ken Grant and Clive Landen, along with guest lecturers such as Martin Parr, Alfredo Jaar, and Simon Norfolk, who also graduated form Newport’s prestigious school of art. While at the University Eleri was awarded the Welsh Livery Guild Prize for Art Science and Technology in recognition of her photographs of Tinker’s Bubble.

After completing her Degree in 2004, Eleri went on to complete her photographic studies at University College Falmouth, gaining an MA in Photography as Contemporary Practice.

Eleri now lives in South Wales and maintains her own photographic practice, while studying for a postgraduate teacher-training certificate. Amongst many other cameras she still uses the 1959 grey Rolliflex and hopes one day to be able to repay the loan to her parents.
